Christmas Jobs

Okay so I am trying to save for a mortgage. I already have a part time job and do overtime when I can.
I was thinking today about applying for a Christmas job. Does anybody know when companies usually start taking applications for Christmas temps?
I realized we are almost into September, and companies usually start people in about November. Presumably companies will need time to sort through applications, check references and maybe crbs?
I have looked and so far all I can find are jobs on boots website (it wont let me post the link, but if you google boots jobs its very easy to find)
Maybe people could post links to other companies which are taking on christmas jobs?
Keep a list for all the other job seekers too

Can you spend some time at the weekend/evening/lunch time going around all the shops and handing your cv in?
I know Debenhams and TKMax have been advertising recently for seasonal staff as well as Boots.

I've got my last 2 (shop) jobs by handing in my cv. The other option is to google every shop in the OP's high street.
