Will NOOK charger be OK for Kindle?

I bought a Nook, it was faulty so I sent it back. Also bought a separate Barnes & Noble Nook power adapter from Curry's.

Have now decided to to buy a Kindle instead and am wondering if the Nook charger will work OK with that?

It says on the charger output 5V .85A, but I see on a Kindle charger it is output 5V 1000mA.

Obviously I don't want to risk damaging the Kindle when I get it by plugging it into the wrong thing:eek: Yet some people seem to even use phone chargers on them.

Please does anyone know if it would be OK?

Many thanks

Most likely not as the charge point on both devices will be different as they are competing devices, also you noted the output is different

Does the charger just have a usb socket to put the lead in. In which case it will be fine to plug the lead into though it may not charge quite as fast.

It has an oblong bit with a usb socket one end and two pins the other end that then fit into a 3 pin plug type thing for putting into the wall socket.

I just want to be sure that I won't do any damage:eek:

    Thanks.

Why not use the Kindle charger supplied? Unless they've stopped suplying them in the last 6 months.

Amazon have only supplied a USB charging lead with any of their Kindle range for quite some time now, if you want an adapter for mains charging they are extra.

Aye, they stopped supplying them before I got my mum a kindle (I can't remember if that was last Christmas or the one before), I think it was when they introduce the sub £100 models.

If the Nook and Kindle both accept the same physical connection, then they should be able to use the same charger - USB 1 and 2 from the PC is a maximum output of 500ma (if they stick within the specificiations), yet any of the ebook readers will charge from that (I've got an older model ebook reader that can charge from PC in 4 hours, or from it's dedicated charger in 2, unfortunately it doesn't charge off non PC USB connections which is annoying).
The higher output on the likes of the kindle and nook dedicated chargers is to allow the device to charge up faster, the 850ma, and 1000ma markings are the maximum the charger can deliver, and the charger should be able to deal with a device using less that that (indeed they have to cope with the device shutting off it's input bar a trickle when the device is fully charged).

The situation with things like tablets is slightly different as they tend to require a lot more current, hence some tablets and phones are no longer able to charge from generic USB chargers that meet the minimum spec, or a normal PC USB port (unless sometimes if the tablet/phone is "off" thus it's not using most of the USB power just to keep turned on).

Both devices have micro USB sockets for charging. As long as your charger (or computer) can provide 5V at 500mA or more, it will work fine. I use my Kindle charger to charge Kindle, Nook, bluetooth earpiece, MP3 player, Nokia phones, etc.

I have a Kindle (the basic one) and I use the charger from our Nexus 7 as it's the same connector.

A kindle doesn't need much power. I've found that any USB charger laying around the house works fine.
