receiving income from son

Hi, my ex is receiving housing benefit, csa, tax credits etc. The eldest has just left college and started an apprenticeship. He is earning £344 a month but she charges him £160 per month for his rent. Would this affect her housing benefit and have to declare it as an income to the authorities?

Your son is now classed as a non dependent and as such a deduction will be made from the HB as it is assumed that the non dependent will be contributing to the household.
Amounts deducted vary from council to council. You can google your ex's council + housing benefit + non dependent deductions to find out the rate.
The same applies to Council Tax support.
So, basically, yes, the change of circumstances need to be reported to the council.
If they are not reported then it is assumed that your son is earning at the highest band and this deduction will take place so....she must report it!0 -
The rates for non dep deductions from Housing Benefit are the same across the country.
The non dep deductions from Council Tax Support will vary from council to council depending on their local council tax support scheme.
Any change in household or financial circumstances have to be reported at once. Failure to declare could lead to a financial penalty. These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.0 -

You forgot to mention that if the mother gets DLA then any income from the son won't effect the housing benefit received.0 -

Not necessarily. Depends what component of DLA.These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.0
