Just been quoted for a Solar Panels system - does this sound ok/right

We live in an old ex local authority house that has been extended to include an extra lounge, bedroom and bathroom (granny annex). We have electric heaters that we move around the house as we have no formal heating apart from a wood burner in the kitchen diner.

We have no gas here. Most properties are on oil.

We are able to have a 4kWh system on our SW facing roof. We have no shading. We have a water cylinder so we have been quoted for an Immersun as well.

The SAP calculation is:

Panels - 16 Facing - SW Panel output- 4.00 Peak output- 3.20 Solar radiation - 1027.00 Shading factor 1.0 SAP kWh/year - 3286

Income and savings -

Feed in tariff - 3,286.00 Kwh x 14.90 = 489.61
Export tariff - 1,643.00 Kwh x 4.64 = 76.24
Energy used - 3,286.00 x 15.32 = 503.42
So they are saying we will save - £1069.27

The salesman also said we should get a cheque from out provider for about £250 a quarter.

I am really not convinced - if it is that good why don't more people have solar panels?

Please can someone advise if this sounds right before I go ahead.

(All these figures will be in a contract and they say if we do not get what they say we should then they will pay the difference)

- We are a family of 4. My mother, me, partner and nine year old. There is always someone here in the day based on our jobs/ school so the heating is on all day hense our electric bill of £200+ per month in the winter:eek: - the house is a four bed, two bath, kitchen diner (25ft by 20ft) and lounge (17ft by 20ft. -

Thanks in advance

Most of the figures you've been quoted sound ok except for your Energy Used. Even with an Immersun you will be hard pushed to use all of the energy generated during the summer months. Consider a days when you generate around 25kWh, the total amount you may hope to store in a normal hot water cylinder is around 8kWh. You could probably use an average of 1kWh each hour during daylight for background use and washing and dish washing - perhaps another12kWh maximum.

During darkest winter, when you would probably use all you are generating, you would be lucky to generate much more then 4kWh per day, so that would be worth just over 60p per day.

With an all electric house with an Immersun to control hot water heating and then a very concious effort to use the power when the sun is shining you may use up to 80% of your generation in-house. I'd be surprised if you could use much more.

Hiya samtoby, I totally agree with Dave, you'll use a huge amount of the leccy (I use about 35%), but 100% during the 'BST' months will be unlikely, so work on the 80% figure.

Regarding annual generation, SAP figures aren't very good as they are based in Sheffield. Bournemouth will blow em out of the water. Using PVGIS, there is a walkthrough on this thread, post#1 section 5

I got 3,330kWh for a 4kWp system at SW (45d after south) for Sheffield, but for Bournemouth I got 3,950kWh. So you need to have a play, and try to stick the pin on your house.

Working from there, we get a guesstimate income stream of:
    FIT 3,950 * 14.9p = £588
    Export 1,975 * 4.64p = £91
    Leccy savings 3,950 * 80% * 15.32p = £484
    Total = £1,163

Strewth, that seems pretty high! Hope someone else checks this.

So, the million dollar question is how much was the quote? Around £6k would be nice, over £7k is starting to get a little high. I suspect with your potential income, they quoted about £9k?

    Mart.

Thank you very much Dave. I am a Solar panel novice I don't really know much. Figures are great but we are relying on the payments from the board to help pay for the system. We are very interested in the Immersun because that sounds great. Do you think the payments that the salesman is saying from the board is realistic?

We did look into having a company fitting them for free but it doesn't look very lucrative.

    Mart.

Are you saying from that - you think we will be generating quote a lot?

He did say something about Sheffield and the fact we will be better off in Bournemouth.

I would get some more quotes if I were you, that seems a little high, as Martyn says between £6k and £7k would be nearer the mark. Your quote is probably based on your potential income/return.

It has come out at 1390 but I just put South on the roof but we have a Southwest roof. Thanks. It seems so high that I doubt we will make as much as that!

Oh this does include some (2) panel radiant heaters which we have one of upstairs to test in our spare room. We have manky storage heaters at the moment so some nice panel heaters which are less costly.
