Faulty french doors

Hi,
Wondering if you can help me out, we had new windows and doors fitted in jan 13. We have had nothing but problems with the french doors not locking at all, we have had to go to bed at night with them left unlocked. We have had the company who fitted them out 3 times already. All they do is adjust something to make them lock and then Leave but it only last a few weeks. How would you recommend i tackle this from now on. Im going into the company this morning i have a good mind to tell them i want a new door fitted because what they are currently doing isnt working. Would i be in my rights to do so?

Regards
Ollie

I would ask for a new solution, as clearly the adjustments are not working. A new door would certainly be something I'd suggest, or ask for an expert to come and take a look.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • Thanks for your response, i will try that when i see them. Upto now i have been dealing with them over the phone, so hopefully face to face will eventually sort this, wish me luck ha.

    Regards
    Liam

Be polite but firm with them, make it clear that further adjustments are not working and not acceptable, then see what they suggest!

UPVC French doors do often need adjusting because the weight of the doors stresses the hinges and they pull themselves out of alignment. Children swinging on the doors can also cause problems. The fact that the re-alignments work for a while, suggests that the OP should just use an Allen key to do such adjustments every so often.
Only if the doors have been fitted incorrectly will a new door be considered. It doesn't sound like this is the case.
  • Whilst it's true that UPVC doors may need adjusting, I would say that as these doors were only fitted a maximum of 8 months ago and have already been done 3 times and a further adjustment is now needed then there must be something wrong with the installation.

It could be that the hinges are not suitable for the weight of the doors or maybe the frame is slightly out of adjustment.
I have a patio that has UPVE french doors and these were installed about 3 years ago and they have never needed adjusting.

As per the Sale of Goods Act, there is a fault with the product and you are entitled to a remedy. Such remedy must not cause significant inconvenience to yourselves.

So far they have insisted on a repair, but this has caused significant inconvenience as the fault has re-occurred. I would write, stating this and giving them one last chance to fix the problem or you are entitled to an alternative remedy; a replacement product or a full refund. If they won't provide this themselves, get an alternative company in and take yours to the small claims court to recover the cost.
