Has anybody got any experience / thoughts on retrofitting a Command Sat Nav into a CLK? Is it a good or a bad idea, if so why. what is the likely cost? Thoughts welcome.

Nip into WHSmiths and get yourself a copy of Mercedes Enthusiast. In the back, in the classifieds, are some people who specialise in retro fitting OEM nav units.
I personally would not retrofit a unit. Partially because if its badly installed by an unexperienced fitter it could lead to electrical problems on the car, and perhaps a battery drain. Some trim may also need to be cut/removed/replaced to fit the unit and you might find that colours don't match up with replacement parts due to fade from sunlight, use etc.
I know a guy who bought a new Merc with cloth trim. He subsequently wanted leather trim, so the dealer took it back and replaced all the seats and trim with leather. Ever since he has no end of electrical troubles with that car. So it seems these things are best left alone, especially with a complicated car like a Mercedes.
Fitting something like a Tomtom will be far cheaper and means you don't need to tamper with the car, thus keeping it all original and to factory specs. Go along to the radio shops and ask plenty of questions and if possible as to look at some sample installations if they have some cars lying around the yard.
Good luck!Lack of money is the root of all evil.

I can't comment on the Merc Sat Nav, but i retrofitted a VW unit to my Golf, i used the forums for advise, and bought all the bits from an Ebay seller in Lithuania....Sat Nav with GPS antenna and U.K Disc for approx £240, plug and play loom approx £20. I removed the OE radio cassette and single CD player to give me a double din opening for the Sat Nav unit to fit into, basically everything was plug and play on the Golf.
I sold my TomTom,radio cassette and cd player to offset the cost of the new stuff although the Merc units seem a lot more expensive, i don't know how much you were thinking of paying?

I sold the TomTom becuse a i felt it was a security issue!Sponsored by Tesco Clubcard Points !!0 -
I really wouldnt recomend it. My dads got the COMMAND system in his merc and when I took it on holidays it drove me barmy. Its CD based (so slower than card based tom toms etc) and less up to date (ok, fault of the CD)
I'd recomend a tom tom or similar any day- for startes you can take it out when you sell it!0 -
Thanks for the info. I am thinking twice about retrofitting one.0

You really, really cannot retro fit COMAND (it is spelt with one M!) into a Mercedes. It's a great system but needs to be full factory fit.
Any engineer thinking they can do it is on a fast track to aftersales misery!
Get a Tom Tom with the euro maps option. You can update you unit over the internet too.“Official Company Representative

As long as you can guarantee to buyers that it will not invalidate their vehicle warranty in any way and you have that back up from Mercedes Benz the manufacturer...then brilliant!
I'd disagree with the quality of the nav'...go anywhere near the A30 in Devon around Exeter, for instance, and COMAND thinks you're in the Atlantic and shows nothing but sea for around 6 miles!!! It has a number of 'blank' spots in the UK...I've done 80,000 miles with one so can probably list most but the A30 is the one I recently hit so remeber it more than most. However, its still a lot better than many other manuf'r factory kits.“Official Company Representative
