Paying for used car with credit card

Hi all,

Earlier today I paid for a used car in full from a main dealer via bank transfer, I then realised earlier I shouldve paid some of it with my credit card.

How can I now go about doing this? I am sure the bank would reverse the payment if necessary and then for me to pay £100 by credit card and the rest from my bank account as normal, when I tried to see if I could make a payment from my credit card I was unable to transfer any money from it. Am I likely to incur fees from the dealer/credit card company for doing this?

Sorry if this is a ridiculous question, I havent really used my credit card at all but id like the protection it offers especially on a used car so I think its important that this is done.

I think you are too late. I doubt very much that the bank will reverse your transfer and you will annoy the dealer even if they do.

You can't make a payment from your credit card in the same way that you can make a payment from your bank account. You would have to give the dealer your credit card and they would process the transaction from their end.

No they wouldn't. A bank transfer is irreversible in most normal circumstances.

You will have to ask the car dealer to send a part payment back (or give you cash) in exchange for a payment by credit card.

You don't need to spend £100 on CC - even 1p will be enough to trigger s75 protection on the whole purchase (under £30k)

If they agree, the car dealer may charge a 2-3% fee, which you'd have no option to argue with at this late stage.

You are right to be wary. A car dealer went bust on me many years ago, a few weeks after my car purchase, and before paying the warranty company for the 2-year warranty I'd paid for; so I had to pay the warranty company directly again:mad::mad:

These things happen. Even if you paid a few quid extra, it could be very useful should the s*** hit the fan later, although the later date of the CC transaction compared with the sale paperwork may cause a problem with any claim.

Ask the dealer to return, say, £100 and then pay this amount by a CC.

But a refusal should be expected - the time for negotiation is before he funds are passed over, not after.

Sell the car as soon as you pick it up and buy another one using the credit card.

Bit late paying for this one with it though. Add £100 worth of extras to it?
