Buy your sun cream in the USA

Banana Boat sunscreen spray in Walmart in the USA was $6 a can for factor 110. All factors were cheaper than buying in the UK, so would recommend if you're planning a trip, buy it there.

Agree wholeheartedly with this - we always stock up in the US.

Big recommendation for Banana Boat Sports Factor 110 in a spray can too, BEST sun spray ever, no rubbing in, works upside down, best protection etc........ (orange can)
  • definitely best sun spray i have ever used, easy, lasts for 80 minutes in the pool, only need to reapply sooner if you towel dry !! for the kids it was a huge relief as 103 degrees and HOT, not one of us burned at all. you can get it from amazon here in the UK if you're not going to the USA, but it's posted from the US and is a bit more expensive. Will be stocking up next time I go !
  • I bought banana boat stuff but it was only 2 or 3 star rated - so not much protection from UVA rays. Have also seen some sold with no star rating at all. Was a few years ago though so maybe its changed.
  • would imagine it's changed as they had lots in the baby section too suitable for tiny ones. Worked well for us.

I agree that Banana Boat sunscreen is brilliant. A variety of factors and the sports spray is not sticky at all. Neutrogena Face Shield is excellent for face and neck as well, and also goes up to factor 110 :)

A happy Banana Boat user, last year:

Banana Boat has one of the worst effectiveness ratings of any sunscreen brand and it took a huge battering last year when certain product lines had to be recalled as they were actually burning people.

Also be aware that the US standards for sunscreen are very much in the hands of the producers themselves, with no independent oversight on quality or UVA protection - SPF only applies to the less seriously damaging UVB. Even the EU is slightly better regulated but the only country with a reliable, legal standard for sunscreen quality is Australia - so if you must get sunscreen, look for the Aussie approval.

I have bought walgreens own brand in the past and that seemed to do the job and is cheap.

BUT why would a poster join yesterday just to post about a US sold sun lotion and then have it endorsed by another poster who joined yesterday.

    tastes like spam to me
  • But isn't it the case that US sun lotions don't offer the same protection as those available in the UK.

It's one thing to quote a high protection factor. But does this mean the same thing as in the UK?

Every other measurement system is different so why not this.

It is important to check the active ingredients, and of course to apply it correctly.

I see so many burned people here every day on the beach and they think it makes them look healthy.

Well, I've used Factor50 (the highest I could get) bought in the UK, probably Soltan from Boots or similar, and went pink very quickly.

Using the super-high factors from the US I can stay in the sun longer without burning and I haven't had any adverse reactions, even though my skin is quite sensitive.
