Broken Shaver light?

We live in a new-build and the 'defects' period is just up, so all the 13th-month problems seem to be starting now!

Our bathroom shaving light bulb went again a few days back - I tried local shops for a replacement and they were all useless so I thought I'd try an eco-bulb off Amazon to save mucking about.

It just arrived and I plugged it in but no joy - I'm guessing something might have gone wrong with the whole unit, as it no longer charges a toothbrush we also have plugged in. Also I noticed when I took it out that the bulb that broke was properly dark inside like it had really 'burnt' out, not sure if that's relevant.

Is this a common problem? Can't see anywhere obvious for a fuse. There are a couple of screws attaching it to the wall but I'm not sure what circuit the unit is on and I'm wary of opening it up as I have little experience with electrics.

Any suggestions on getting it fixed very welcome!

it sounds like a connection might be loose if you have no shaver power as well. If you are not sure which circuit it's on, then switch off ALL the electrics (use the main switch on the board) and then take the light off the wall to see if any cables have popped out.
  • Thanks I'll try now.

OK, no joy. It's no work of art back there but I can't see any loose cables except a green/yellow that doesn't look like it was meant to be plugged in. :/

well in that case, if all the circuit breakers are on then it's probably the fitting. Time for a new one...
The green and yellow cable is an earth and probably the fitting doesn't require an earth

Right, thanks. Any tips on buying one? Maybe time for a new thread ;)

If you are competent with electrics, first check that there is indeed a live supply to the light fitting. Don't use one of those neon screwdrivers or beeping volt sticks! Best to use a multimeter or even a dedicated electrical tester if you have access to one.

If it is a shaver light with an integral 230->110V transformer, that may have gone.
If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button! ;)

if you are not very confident at DIY then buying exactly the same one will help - the fixing holes will be in the right place and the cables the right length. But then again maybe you don't want to buy one that will fail again in 13 months!!
  • Just a thought but did you replace the cover ?? It possibly doesn't work with it off
  • Oh. My. God - I am such a dumbass! Thanks to all the posters above and especially drive3165, you have just saved me such a load of work.

Of course, it wasn't coming on because the cover was still off. Ahem. I'll go and get my coat shall I?

Haha, I love this forum, thanks again to all. Shame I ordered a replacement unit already, but at least now I can just return it instead of wasting ages replacing the perfectly fine one I already have!

    You are all awesome.
