Confused by Student Finance

Ok - Student Finance have now totally confused us - can anyone advise what to do in this situation, please?
Son applied for funding - and for various reasons the application was late so the confirmation of loan only has shown up in last ten days online. However: it appears there are two letters on their way to us (neither yet received) both dated same day. They have slightly differing amounts, and the one which is £30 higher requires the declaration signing and returning or no payments are made. The other says he needs to do nothing. They both say the offer supersedes any previous offer.
Assuming we do get them in next day or two - which is the correct/most recent offer?! I am leaning towards signing and returning for the marginally higher amount, but how do we know if that is the correct offer? I would contact the relevant local authority office but they take their time and are pretty unhelpful anyway - they have already lost one batch of proof or earnings we sent and are part of the reason this is so late.
Ideas?

Did he apply for assessed?
One could be non-assessed amount and one could be assessed amount. If you tell us the amounts as well it might be useful.0 -
He applied for assessed - on last year's income (as was last year's loan as well) because we had a drastic drop in income in June 2012.
So both would have been going on the same figures and evidence that we had supplied - income of just over £35K for the year I think (I cannot remember exact amount now).0 -
Update - the confusion is resolved.
My mistake for not reading the online gifs thoroughly ... the letter saying nothing needed to be done was for 2012-13, the one needing the form signed and returned is for 2013-14.
The letters came today so it is ok. I still do not like Student Finance, though...0 -

So it was your mistake for misreading and you still don't like Student Finance :S Have they made another mistake before?0 -

Plenty thanks, in fact I would go as far as to say every year!!
Hopefully when the last issue is resolved in the next week or so will never have to deal with them again0 -
hahahaha - only 2 letter in one day?
My best was 37 in 2 months - all saying different thing, 4 arriving on the same day....
They could cut their postage down soooo much!!!!!!!!
My favourite was them saying they'd never had my birth certificate, and documentation detailing my name change. I 'must have' sent my passport details instead - the only reason I sent them paper copies was because my passport was out of date, and therefor not valid for their needs...
Three weeks later they mysteriously reappeared in an envelope with a compliments slip from them!!!!!!!
