Nasty laminate

On behalf of a friend ...

She has a room with cheap nasty laminate and wishes to put carpet down instead. Is it ok just to carpet on top of the laminate or should it be pulled up?

  • Seems a waste of time to rip it up, so long as it's down firm. I don't see the difference between carpeting over laminate, to carpeting over floorboards

You can put underlay and then carpet, but in that case the doors will probably need trimming.
Remember that laminate flooring is not fixed down, it just 'floats'.

Yep - we didn't think about the doors either. But at least that seems to be the only issue, and tbh I've known carpet alone cause the same problem (which is why, durr, we should have have thought of it).

Has the friend considered getting a large rug instead? Then she wouldn't have a door problem.

Just rip the laminate up... what will it take? 30 mins maximum to pull it all up.

I had hideous laminate, carpet fitters advised get rid; ripped it up but kept the 3mm underlay and put the carpet underlay on top of that. Doors are fine.
