Well this morning the door was opened and closed several times at 2am waking myself and my boyfriend. I haven't ever heard it at that time before so maybe the door is getting worse, I don't know - either way we need to sort it because it is driving us mad.

I will put a note through their door later but in all honesty, I don't think they will take notice

If someone put a note through my door, id bin it and think what a t__t, if someone came and tgalked to me about it, i'd probably think what a nice person, ofcourse i wont mind oiling the hinges...

Probably not because that's such a passive aggressive thing to do.

Just man up, knock on their door and politely explain the problem. Far far more likely to work.

No, no, no! Why would you do that? That's just unpleasant. It's bound to simply annoy them, which won't make them willing to help you. Speak to them. Introduce yourself (if you haven't already) with a smile on your face. Explain about the door and offer some oil or WD40. Thank them if they fix it.

If you're really anxious and haven't ever spoken to them before, you could take a bottle of wine as part of the introduction.
    . . .I did not speak out

    Then they came for me
And there was no one left
    To speak out for me..

Leave a can of WD40 and a door wedge outside their front door.

WD40 is not a good lubricant, its a penetrant so will lubricate a seized hinge but will run off quickly and the OP's neighbours will have squaky doors again pretty soon. Better with 3-in-1 oil. :D

Speak to them first. If you get no results, you then have the upper hand being in the upstairs flat. Give them a taste of their own medicine and see how they like it. I know it's not ideal, but it will sometimes show them how noisy it can be in flats. They probably have no idea because you're going out your way to be quiet

Don't put a note thru door as that's evidence and they can say you're harassing them.
