I think Obama is handling this extremely well - the opposition to Assad needs to come from the whole world.
Tonight's Channel4 news showed a passionate inquisition of one of Assad's principal 'advisers' - if you think that the Frost/Nixon interviews were of everlasting significance, then take a look at Jon Snow's efforts to get some straight answers from a representative of the Assad regime.

if he has handled it so well, why is he about to lose the vote?
how is supporting a bunch of religious bearded nut jobs a good job?
seeing as both teams have access to sarin, im still waiting for solid evidence that Assad was responsible for this.0 -

Many of those nationals that i speak to fully agree with me. There is little support for militant salsafists who choose to take action abroad at government level, similar amongst the bulk of the population. The National is an interesting read ( bit like the metro, but more highbrow).
I learned one thing whilst 'in'; the vast, vast majority of people around the world are law abiding, decent citizens who don't want to rob you blind, slit your throat or shoot you dead.
I think the media does a terrible job of representing certain groups in a very poor light.
Doesn't mean I don't think we should tolerate jihaddi salsafists or wahabbists who refuse to discuss, to argue, instead choose to go down a certain line. If they choose to fight, bring it on. The vast majority of Arabs in the gulf want the same goals as the majority of us. To to work, raise a family, promotion at work. Granted, the living wage is pretty good, but this is the only main difference.
The government should choose to support whatever side that will provide the long term stability for Syria, protection for minority groups and the ability to trade with foreign nations.
The rebels don't offer any of that. Those that will take control don't even want democracy.0 -

Western governments should be under no obligation at all to offer support to any nation/population/religion/ethnic group which is not willing to 'sign up' to the wstern way of life. The only reason we need to keep on the right side of middle-eastern countries is because they have oil. But oil is a fossil fuel, and we are supposed to be finding alternatives.
We can only threaten Syria because we have superior weapons. But Syria is being armed by Russia. So why don't we threaten Russia?
We should leave the middle east to its own chosen path, and just make sure that they do not threaten our own well-being.
Recently, it is the behaviour of the western banking system which has posed the biggest threat...

Who is to say the Western way of life is the way of life?
Should the US be given as a shinning example?"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Obama seems to think so, and so does David Cameron.
We already have the Western way of life, and, so long as the property market can be rescued, that seems to be the life we all want.
Are the Syrian rebels fighting to achieve a Western way of life? Is Assad fighting to maintain a Western way of life?
Or are they just fighting for reasons which the Western way of life rejected in favour of the Industrial Revolution, and the advent of Capitalism?

I am not sure what Syria is fighting for or if it is even Syria (government and rebels) that started it.
You seemed to suggest they (whoever they maybe), should only be supported if they signed up to the western way of life."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

They tell us that it is for 'humanitarian' reasons, but they could have said that many times in the recent past, and they continue to pick and choose which war crimes they are willing to get excited about.
They tell us that 'democracy' is the only way forward, and that any regime which will not embrace democracy is unacceptable.
The Western world has weapons of mass destruction, and it uses them to threaten countries which will struggle to defend themselves.
