Where to start?

Hello everyone, my mum and dad have decided to reclaim PPI on their loans and credit cards.
However, my dad in particular has loans going as far back as 1980's. They dont have much , if any information on any of the loans. Where should they start?
Should they write letters to all their banks asking for all information on past loans / credit cards?
Or can you only reclaim on loads / credit cards that you have all the information for?
Any help is much appreciated, thank you

they can phone and ask but due to the age of some of them, they may not be able to tell you so you'll need the closed account method
