  • i am in the process of decorating a room which has a new radiator, we bought a "bargain basement" rad that was a bit scratched , so I want to paint it.. I think the satin wood paint sounds the best idea... just want to make it look better....

I hate painting rads & I think they never look right painted, actually I don't like rads full stop.

I bought covers for all of mine (you can get good deals on ebay) nicer to look at.

Personally, as its a brand new rad, and never been painted, I would go for a coat of oilbased undercoat first, slightly thinned with white spirit.
when dry, then do 2 coats of satinwood, again I would add just a smidgeon of white spirit to the satin.

If you have an old jar,or a container of somesort, as you need to pour some of the paint into it, as you wont need much, add approx half a teaspoon of white spirit and stir.

this will give the paint a smoother flow, and make it easier for the diyer to paint, plus you get a nicer finish.

I know a lot of people have used emulsion, and its thier choice, and I am pleased its turned out okay for them, but as the rad is metal, you should really use the appropiate paint, and the oil base UC, satinwood, gloss, eggshell, is the perfect paint to use.

I wouldnt even use the 'radiator paint', its horrible stuff, unless they have improved it over the last few years.
  • Are you referring to just normal gloss paints or those for metal?
