We just moved into a property with them in 4 rooms. Some come off really easy and after a bit of dry glue scraping will be ceiling papered.

Contact your local fire station and ask if you can speak to someone about fire prevention and risks. They'll know the law for your area and nationally, and have a real interest in making sure everyone is kept safe and fire-free.

Existing polystyrene tiles are not illegal as such, but they are an extreme fire risk, particularly in kitchens and ideally should be removed. Painting them with emulsion does reduce the fire risk slightly.

OK - stupid question of the week then.

Why isn't your landlord dealing with this?

The landlord has no legal obligation to remove them, but it is good practice to remove them.

I have just refurbed a house, and the built in wardrobes had them in, very strange. And yes i did remove them.

The best thing to Op can do is contact the landlord/letting agent.

Yes I know and I agree too. IF OP was worried about them then why rent that property in the first place?

Has OP got landlord's permission to do this? (Q is for OP actually)

  • I don't really see the problem, other than the fact that they are an eyesore.
They've been up for what 30-40 years, fire free...
