I posted a thread linking to the triple QX 5 ltr for £12.49 oil. For VAG cars, meets 2 VW specifications.
Got a torrent of responses saying it's cheap, it's going to blow up the engine, it's inferior to VW oil etc.
I remember reading that SHell supplies Triple QX and is equivalent in quality to the shell branded stuff. But have no source to verify this. Anyone know?

Don't know who makes it, but it gets good reviews on Briskoda.net.
There is some debate as it 'meets the requirements of' the VW Spec without being approved, but I'm happy to use it.0 -

Marketing it as meeting the spec means it will meet the spec or else they'd be lining themselves up for some very expensive claims for new engines.
Make oil to correct spec = relatively cheap and easy.
Pay VW to endorse it as "approved" = very expensive indeed.0 -
I know that the ecp poster on a MB forum danced around for ages about who the supplier is/was, but categorically stated their gloop for VWs was actually approved by VAG.0

FYI they have got official VW approval but the price has jumped up. I wonder if it's just a premium for licensing or if they changed their formula now.
nb on 5w30 (longlife) oil not 5w400 -
I was told by an ECP employee that it is made by Shell. I've used it and have had no issues.0

I use nothing but, and it's been fine for the last four cars and 70K+ miles including a VAG 1.9TDI.0
