If you live in a seperate house to your ex you should put in a claim for housing benefit and also income support. If you ex is receiving the child benefit for your children you cant claim tax credits.
You should as someone else has advised (hard as it sounds) cut loose your ex (she will be able to claim tax credits and also depending on income savings ect - income support which brings with it free school meals, clothing grants, housing benefit).
I know things seem bad but once you take the steps you need to take i.e. getting your benefits sorted the pressure does lift.
