Hi we live in a old house and its only now after 17 years that we are getting it the way we want it.
In saying the above we dont have any debt which is a good thing.
As exarmydreamer says save, save and save. If you do go for a old house be prepared for some structural work unless its been renovated fully.
Another tip is get as many quotes and recommendations as you can before choosing a tradesman. You will be suprised at the amount to be saved although the cheapest may not be the always be best choice.

Think outside the box when buying furniture as you can get some fantastic bargains from auctions, local sellers ect.

Thank you for all your replies- We currently live in a unfurnished flat- and bought most of our furniture through charity shops so wouldn't think twice doing that again.
