Hello I really need some advice here
Apart from my son having a brain tumour and my Mum also having cancer and on chemo (and now living with us for the last month) my husband has been out of work since last Christmas, he refuses to sign on and has been busking to make ends meet. I was getting DLA as carer for my son but they stopped that
times are hard!
Husband had a 300 quid overdraft at the bank (he is a builder) and thats been topped up to 600 quid with charges, he was hoping to get a few weeks work to pay it off but it didn't happen so he talked to an asian fella from the bank that he couldn't really understand and agreed to something :?
Today we have a letter saying he has to pay the 600 odd quid in 14 days with daily interest!!!!????
Please help we have less than nothing and all sorts of things to pay and I am very near the end of my rope

Thanks for the reply Moneyineptitude
very mush appreciated
I thought I might get a little in depth help from the 100 plus people that read this but :?0 -
Give your husband a good shake and tell him he needs to either get a job or sort out his benefit entitlement!
For what reason was your son's DLA stopped, does he no longer have the care needs he did before? When was his award stopped?0 -

Almost 200 read it now but if they don't have any advice to offer, there's probably not much they can say.
No idea what agreement your OH came to with the bank but it doesn't sound like he got across to them that he had no way of paying off the OD at the moment.
Trouble is, the bank probably wondered why they should help him out when he won't even claim any benefit entitlement
Apart from trying the bank again with a current financial hardship plea, the advice in post 2 seems your best course of action. Get some help with this.0 -
Type2tattoo at the risk of sounding a wee bit harsh I'm not sure what magical advice you hoped folks on here are going to give. If your OH doesn't even know what he agreed to is really hard for any one to give you any specific advice on that - however even if we knew all the details I'm sure the advice would be the same -
in the first instance speak with the bank and explain you are not in a position to pay and what arrangements could they come to
- if they are not sympathetic then contact Citizen Advice or one of the debt charities,
- investigate if you have any appeal against the DLA being stopped
- give OH a reality check claim the benefits you are entitled to whilst he is looking for a job
That genuinely was meant to be helpful and hope you find you way out of this soon.CC debt Aug 2018 £50.2K

Hi everyone, I am really sorry for my curt replies and negativity back there, I was up to my ears in it.
It took 11 weeks for the DLA to realise their mistake and re instate my sons DLA, it seems they are doing it to everyone and if you fight you get it back, if you don't you don't need it (or are too ill to fight, which I have found a lot of)
My Mum is doing well on chemo and sort of back to her old self.
My OH is complicated and has done nothing and heard nothing :? my focus is my Son and Mum and its still hard work but we are getting by
Thankyou all for your responses x x x0 -

Your husband is putting his own pride by not signing on infront of not putting dinner on the table for his family? That doesn't make any sense.
Tell him to get to a recruitment agency, they'll give him work.0 -
He has pride and doesn't want to be labeled a scrounger, that is his choice. As I said its complicated and I respect him for his decision.0

Benefits are available to help people in certain situations. It isn't scrounging to make use of these whilst you're in that situation. By that logic, in claiming DLA you're already scrounging.0
