To throw in another question, what sort of price per kilo would people think was reasonable for free range/organic meat?

Tesco want £16.00 per kilo for chicken!

I stated earlier, I pay £5.95/kg for free range chicken breasts supplied by Smithfield market.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Lidl have turkey steaks on offer for £1.49 per 375g pack = £3.97 per kg (this Sat and Sun ONLY).
Hard to beat that price unless reduced 9yellow sticker) somewhere and stock up time if you like turkey steaks.

But surely that makes it even more important to source your meat?

Yes, but what do you have to go on, the butchers word and a piece of paper?

Some butchers will buy a pig from the farm down the road, and get the paper work for it. Then when that pig is sold they will sell another one from, say, Poland, under the same label and paperwork.

When a small independent butcher does something wrong it isn't widely reported, usually only the locals hear about it.

But when a branch of a big supermarket does something wrong it is national news. And the headlines are Tesco/Asda (or whoever) fined for selling "bad" meat, even though it may only be one branch. Then people all over the country stop buying meat from Tesco/Asda or whoever the supermarket was.

So I think maybe you can be more sure that the meat you buy from a supermarket is actually what they say it is, because they get hit much harder if they do something wrong.
But relatively few will do that.

I don't think most people care, I certainly don't. Or to be fair, I should say that people do care, but they have other things that are more important to them and where their meat comes from is too far down on the list.
All my meat comes from Smithfields. I know it's quality and value for money.

I'm sure, when I googled yesterday, I spotted an article about a smithfield butcher or meat wholesaler being fined £1,000's for refusing to say where his meat came from when he was inspected.

I can only assume that the £1,000's he was fined was less than he would have got if he'd told the inspectors where his meat came from!

I'm sure he is/was the exception, but when it comes to food, especially meat, there are a lot of people who try to make a fast buck by selling something that isn't what it is supposed to be.

Maybe that's why so many people don't think about what their meat actually is or where it comes from, because if they did they wouldn't eat it.

Sadly not. Tell him he should expand his business nationally :D

I was wondering the same! Only way I can think is yellow stickers but happy to be shown otherwise

Yes, I don't pay more than 25% of the price in supermarkets. Go at the right times and you can get loads, my chest freezer is stuffed full of goodies!

The higher prices are when I pay 50% or 70% in Lidl/Aldi. But the meat is cheaper to start with so works out OK.

I would not believe that to be true free range/organic chicken meat at that price. It's far too cheap. I'll place my bet that the chicken has been grown in a barn and has access to outside enabling it to be called free range when in reality the chicken probably has only ever been outside for a few hours in the last few weeks of it's life.

I don't suppose you have the chicken EC code with you that you could put here?
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

    A what?

And yes, it is free range. And one way of telling the difference is the colour/texture of flesh and presence of blood. You won't find that on barn raised chickens as they're raised far too fast and don't have time to properly develop muscle tissue.
