    Do you only eat chicken breast? It works out a lot cheaper to buy a whole chicken and portion it up - easy to follow guides can be found on youtube.com.

    Or have a look on here for 'rubber chicken' meals - that can also help your budget.
    Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....

    I have seen our local butcher does 5kg chicken breast for £24-25 which was good when I compared to the amount you get for £10 packs in Tesco.

    Don't forget the quality of the meat you get from your butcher is vastly superior and he will be able to tell you exactly where it's sourced. Supermarket meat is frequently pumped full of water, glucose and nitrites so you're left with a much reduced quantity when it's cooked.

    For example, I can feed two of us with one single chicken breast (220g) that I buy from my butcher (£5.95/kg) yet I need a minimum of two if I use Tesco chicken breasts and they cost £12/kg :eek:

    i feel quite giddy ...i think some of the 3 for a tenner is ok...i love costco but find the trays expensive and if i spend £30 on a tray i get one tray and no variety...i dont want to pay for water or nasties and i am keen to buy british....i also live in the sticks so it can be hard to get nice food

    at the moment i am buying from a very nice butchers but it is costly...i am looking forward to a few christmas offers on the big joints so i can freeze a few

    Until you google something like "butcher fined" and read some of the 1,370,000 results from the UK alone.

    and he will be able to tell you exactly where it's sourced.

    And sometimes he will tell you it is expensive goat from Botswana when it's really just cheap old mutton!

    water, glucose and nitrites are allowed in food, some butchers have been fined for adding stuff that is illegal to add to food.

    Good butchers are good, but there are a heck of a lot of bad ones these days.

    You can't say "Don't forget the quality of the meat you get from your butcher is vastly superior" these days, you have to say "Don't forget the quality of the meat you get from a good butcher is vastly superior"

    my limits for fresh meat

    chicken breasts - 60p each (have had to raise that from 50p :eek: ;)
    whole ckicken - £2 a kilo
    stewing beef - £3 a kilo
    frying/rump beef - £4 a kilo
    sirloin/ribeye beef - £6 a kilo
    any cut of pork - £3 a kilo

    Yellow stickers might be one way to go. I personally only buy meat in Waitrose or my local farm shops. I will buy YS'd in other supermarkets if its a cheap offer, to freeze and use in stews etc.

    Be aware that as PPs have said, a lot of cheap meat is simply bulked out. With meat I look for quality over quantity and always have one meat free day a week and a fish day too.

    Bulk out mince with lentils or beans, add extra veggies and mushrooms always go well in chicken. Plus you are still getting the proteins.

    Experiment with new dishes, it might sound obvious but a lot of people dot seem to realise you can use less meat in stews, stir fries and the like than having a roast.

    But surely that makes it even more important to source your meat? But relatively few will do that. All my meat comes from Smithfields. I know it's quality and value for money.

    I buy 2kg of chicken breast for £11as that is their offer. It is much much bettter quality and doesn't shrink when cooked like some of the supermarket meat.
    It's only a bargain if you need it.
