HSBC PPI: Totally Confused!

Options
Bear with me, this is a saga:

Received a letter from HSBC saying I was owed PPI. Filled in the form, got offered £1,904. Which I accepted. They then wrote back to me saying the money was being paid direct to Hamptons/Lowell (as I have an outstanding debt with them, which I am paying off). However, the money was not sent. So I wrote to Hamptons/Lowell, who got in touch with HSBC. Hamptons/Lowell then wrote to me saying that HSBC were paying me directly.

However, with no money forthcoming I phoned HSBC who then informed me that the money had gone to a company called Metropolitan (Who? Never heard of them). So I rang Metropolitan who said that they have no account with me and that the money was actually paid to D&G Solicitors. Now, I have no debt with D&G Solicitors.

So, I get back onto the phone with HSBC who said that I had to provide them with evidence that I do not have an account with Metropolitan. They hadn't even heard of D&G Solicitors.

My question is: How do I get the money off HSBC? I have priority debts such as outstanding council tax etc Is that the angle I play? Some insight would be greatly appreciated
