This is our first summer in a new house and I've been watching all sorts of plants come up over the summer- I'm a reasonably experienced gardener, but I've not seen this plant before- anyone recognise it (sorry couldn't see how to insert pic in post):

Cranesbill, also known as hardy geranium?

Mmm - I have some hardy geraniums - but they're not anything like these and when I google images for gernaiums, none of the flowers are as long and trumpet-like as my mystery plant - which is also about 2 feet high!
It also has very dark purple-ish stalks and the flowers close at night.

I have them in my garden, can become invasive as it readily self seeds, but easy to control, and slugs love them, so sort of sorts itself out & is lovely plant IMO

The leaves look like Japanese Anemone but as far as I know, they come in pink or white only, not lilac. Plants are in flower at this time of year. Maybe Google Japanese Anemone and see what you think.

Thanks, no, it's not a Japanese Anemone- but I realise now after googling images that I do actually have a white Japanese Anemone (another flower I couldn't identify) in another part of the garden - Thanks!

Fabulous! That's it - thank you! I have a garden that has a lot of very established and somewhat unusual plants and shrubs from a previous owner who was obviously a keen gardener, like me. I'm now trying to identify, label and research all those plants that are new to me!
    Thank you for the link.
