Student loan advice please

Options
My daughter is due to start college in 2 weeks. She is 22, single with a 5 month old baby and recieving income support and tax credits.

She will be doing a Diploma Level 2 in beauty therapy, are student loans available to her on this type of course and with being in reciept of the above benefits.

At the moment she is living at home with us, but next week she moves into her own place.

Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

Student Loans are for university courses, which start at Level 5 I think. Level 2 won't be entitled to them.

She may be entitled to a means tested bursary and/or other grants, to pay for travel and other expenses.

She should ask for the appropriate forms and information at the Student Advice Centre at her proposed college.

some colleges have a 19+ bursary fund which you can apply to for support, they may have the info on the website?

There will be a student support fund at the college that she can apply to for things like books, uniform costs, travel and sometimes childcare.

Is this her first level 2 course or has she previously studied at level 3 (NVQ, A levels etc) before? Most colleges don't have fees for under 23's if its their first level 1 or 2 course but with courses such as beauty or art she may have to pay something towards materials / equipment but could get part of this paid from the student support fund.

Hi thanks to everyone for their advice..i have looked up the college website and they offer a hardship fund, it's just to help towards the cost of petrol and parking which will be approx £50.00 a week, she has purchased her own uniform and kit but luckily the course has been funded.

She needs to be realistic, she'll get nothing like £50 per week for travel, I'm afraid. Why is this going to be so expensive?

We did'nt think she would get anywhere near £50 a week, when re calculating it will cost her £40 a week. She is doing 3 full days and the parking is in a multi storey car park as everywhere around the college is double yellow lines. It's £10 per day parking and approx £10 in petrol per week. After looking at the forms for the hardship fund her father and i have decided to pay the parking for her...less hassle.

Anyway i really appreciate everyones help, thankyou.
