Being made redundant

I am being made redundant this week, as is everyone who works in this small business.
i have been working full time for approx 10 years then part time for 4 years an since christmas full time again.
My husband is in full time employment.
will i be entitled to redundnacy pay ? my employer says there is no money for redundancy as the company is closing due to no money coming in, but he has not gone bankrupt .
can i sign on ? for how long ? would i be better signing on the sick ? as i did actually go to my docs on Fri and got a self cert line for a week as i am so stressed out with work.
Then i went in this morning to be told - "sorry you will all loose your jobs come friday "
didnt hand in my sick note.....
any advise ?

No need to slash your wrists.

Being in a post that is made redundant can be surprisingly liberating.
    If terrifying at first.

Hang in there - check the sites and talk to your colleagues, you are all in the same boat, better to stick together to get the best possible out of the company.

If you have any questions feel free to ask and I'll do my best to help.

I do counselling for careers and those being made redundant as it happens.

Are you still entitled to Redundancy pay EVEN if you are NOT in the union. I wouldnt have a clue as to what union i should have been in ...thats the worst about working for a small company. I know for sure my employer will try and get out of paying me Redundancy.

No need to belong to a Union to be entitled to redundancy pay.

But, as I said earlier, no harm in talking to your colleagues and banding together to make sure you get, as a minimum, what you are entitled to.

Divide and conquer is often a technique used, but bosses who wish to get away with as much as possible.

Not all employers so I am not having a go at everyone, but I have seen it done.

Yes you are. All the Union will do (sometimes not very well) is negotiate with the employer for you. Redundancy pay is your STATUTORY RIGHT no matter how small the company is. The only way they might get out of it is by going into liquidation. Previous poster is correct that the CAB is a good idea, but you can work it out for yourself from the link I gave you earlier.
