You can compost almost anything. How do you think forests get rid of wood stuff :D
You don't have a compost bin for woody waste, just make a big heap. Cut the woody waste up as small as possible and turn it now and again. A few loads of grass cuttings on it will help it break down, as will you OH weeing on it :D It makes lovely compost but will take a couple of years at least, it does break down and start to get smaller though, especially when you jump on it as I and my daughter do :D we use it as a cheap trampoline.

Are you seriously trying to tell me you have this huge garden and no compost bins. Shame on you :) get over to the composting thread. They can encourage rats, but if you keep the wrong things out of it, you should be ok.

I didn't say the garden was huge/massive, my one is 115 foot, the other side is 150 foot. They are not square:eek: , but long & skinny.

I didn't really want a working garden  type of thing, more a low maintenance sort of outside room type thing.

A few years is a long time to have a heap in the garden. I think the real answer is to replace the hedges with fencing:D

I take grass to the dump in a black sacks, can you put grass cuttings in a compost bin then:confused: If I didn't want a big heap for the woody stuff, could I just get a neat compost bin & use it for grass cuttings?

If I only used it for grass cuttings, is there any risk of rats? However small?

You can't really just compost grass cuttings in a bin, it won't do very well. As I said, have a read through the composting thread, you can learn all about it there.

the shredder sound's like a good idea, as you can then use it to put around your plants (chipped bark) and this will stop weed's therefore making it maintenance free, or get a garden waste bin from your local council they collect them every 2 week's in north yorkshire, and cost £20 to buy, they also collect them from feb-nov each year, I didn't think I'd need one, but got one anyway, and have used it ever since, every 2 week's it get's filled to the top and put out, great, no more bonfire's.
    hope this help's.

Thats very true, if you shred it, you should compost it for a while anyway, before you spread it round your plants, so get a cheap bin or two :)http://www.recyclenow.com/home_composting/
