Please recommend a good photo printer..

My OH says she would like a good photo printer for her scrapbooking for Christmas - what an irony after years of digital photos !

She won't be printing tons of photos but is after a printer than could do good quality prints up to A4 size.

Budget up to £200 but hopefully closer to the £150.

Thank you in advance

Richard

I wouldnt worry too much about initial purchase price of unit (within reason), you really want to look at the folloow on cost of running the printer.

IE: Ink costs, Drums, printheads, any other stuff like that.

    I have been stung before.

I might suggest a Canon 5350 or amaybe a Brother 5910DW? Overkill but gives you A3 capability within your budget?

I have just bought this package: http://www.ijtdirect.co.uk/BrotherMFCJ5910DW/

Whatever you buy, CHECK FOLLOW ON CONSUMABLES COST FIRST.

    ;) Good Luck.

Let me know what you go for........

We have found what she wants. Coincidentally it was the canon mg5450 which came in at £90 with free delivery from Argos.

Edit 29.8.13 : I got the model wrong - it's the 5450 not as originally put the 5350 and it came from Amazon - why ? Because Argos could not fulfil the order.

Ended up with MG5450 at approx. £93 to the door ! Sounds great and should be here tomorrow !

  • I see you've found your printer which is good, I was just going to add that if its printing to keep for the future I would think twice about printing yourself on an inkjet printer.

The ink won't last as long as a professionally printed image will, as well as being less durable when encountering water. Online photo printing on sites like photo box is so cheap now it may even work out more cost effective when you look at the prices of ink cartridges.

I just thought that was worth a mention as we had some large prints we made in our hall and after eight years they are noticeable faded and the black is turning red/brown.

Yes, will get some nice pictures from that, but being only 4 colour printer, prints will lack that extra punch, plus A4 prints will quickly use the ink.

Are you sure it was the mg5350 you got from Argos, showing as £54.99 at the moment

Actually selling a Canon 5350 with 3 setys of COMPAT inks for £102.24 all in.

Dare I suggest ebay? Canon has an outlet store. Amazon?

Did we clear up that Argos price? Anywho....good luck and happy printing.

PS - Are we allowed to start talking about Christmas yet......lol!:rotfl:

A good point. Better quality images at least but costs do mount up if you print at the volume my wife does ;)

I know she wants a printer, but I honestly think online printers like photobox are the way forwards. It's the cost of ink and paper for durable prints that really mount up.

£200 could buy some powerful software like lightroom and a course on how to take better photos, or go towards a lens or memory card or tripod. I think that's where the money is better spent, to be honest. Let the professionals bear the costs associated with printing in volume.

Canon MG5450 is a much better photo printer (5 colour) and still well within the budget.

    Canon mg6250

I paid £65 inc delivery a few months ago from an ebay seller, £230 on Tesco!

Brand new in packaging but came with no ink (compatibles are really cheap)

    Photo printing is amazing.

    Cheapest is now

Still only a 4 colour printer, 5th pigment black is for text documents, same as the 5350
