Trying to get open joint account with wife but being denied due to bad credit

Having recently got married my Wife and I would like to open a joint account. We visited Barclays, of which my wife has been a member of for 20+ years, and tried to add my name to her account.
I was contacted 2 working days later and told I had failed a credit check, not only was I not allowed to join her account but they wouldn't even let me open any account with them.
I have had one credit card in the past in which I spent £20 on and paid off the next day, I had finance through Misco for my Macbook which was paid off in full every month via Direct Debit.
I recently moved from London to Derby and was out of work for 1 1/2 months, I have recently started work again.
Another thing to consider, when my wife received her new account card, they had misspelt her new, married name. Maybe the chap at Barclays misspelt my name?
Could anybody help with this?

Get copies of your credit reports from Equifax & Experian and check for any errors.
Are you on the electoral roll?...at the address you put on the application form?0 -
I am checking if I am on the electoral role.
I will check equifax for any errors, is it easy then correct if they are any problems?0 -

If you have recently moved, and haven't contacted your local council to be put on the electoral roll at your new address then you won't be on it. If you contact the council now and ask to be put on the electoral roll now then you will appear on the register from 1 October 2013, though it will likely then take another month or 2 for this infomation to be updated with the credit reference agencies.I will check equifax for any errors, is it easy then correct if they are any problems?
It depends on what any errors or problems are but it often a bit of a pain and takes a bit of time to get any errors corrected.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
