You could make a BIG scratching post. :)

When we got a new puppie he wanted to chew / scratch everything - a spray of lemon juice on popular areas did put him off. The smell might discourage your cat.

Alternatively to a water spray you could try a pet corrector spray - i think it's for dogs usually thougth

It blows a bit of high pressure air which normaly gets their attention. Not sure if it is too scarey for a cat.

I got this for our yappy pup and I only need to show him the can now and he shuts up (for a couple of mins anyway)

I don't know if it would deter a cat but it doesn't work on my puppy! It did on the last one so I bought another one for this pup and she just thinks it's a huge game. She tries to snatch it and catch the compressed air as it comes out of the can. One of the neighbourhood dog walkers, who has numerous Labs, all trained, by him, to working standards (they are the perfect dogs!), told me to make the "tch, tch" noise at her whenever she does something wrong. No, that don't work either. She jumps up and tries to see what's in my mouth that's making the noise. So I've resorted to "Oi, you little sod, stop it!" And it works!:rotfl:

As for the cat, I don't know. My old recently departed cat stropped all over the (new) landing carpet despite having loadsa scratching gear. And when we got a nice new leather suite him and his brother completely trashed it within a few days. You just can't have nice stuff with animals. I think you can get some stuff like double sided sticky tape that's supposed to deter them but it's more for putting up the side of your sofa and on doors and frames etc. You'd need a hell of a lot to do the entire carpet! I'd say, remove the cat from the area when you see him doing it and shut him in a non carpeted room but you've got to catch him first!
