Ikea kitchens

Options
Just a bit of a moan really.

We used the in-store design people to design our new kitchen, providing all the dimensions etc. Went through all the options etc, so far so good.

Had it delivered and arranged our own installation with a builder friend.

Fine until the worktops are about to go on. Discover that ikea only do 2.4m lengths of worktop as standard. So a 3m run of units would have to have a join. Which on a fairly short run would look pretty rubbish. Just about everyone else does longer lengths. The guy in the store didn't bother to point out we would have to have a join.

They can do longer as a special order, which wasn't explained to us :( plus it seems they have a long delivery time for special orders.

Their customer services at lease did agree to collect the work tops and refund them - now we just need to buy our own from elsewhere.

It wont be the end of the world but delays finishing it off and costs us extra to get the carpenter back to do the work tops.

The other thing to watch for is that kitchen units from most suppliers have a hidden void behind the units where pipes etc go - but not Ikea theirs go flat back to the wall, so any existing pipes have to be moved - why they cant make theirs "normal" to help reduce installation costs is beyond me.

If we ever have to put another kitchen in I wouldn't choose an Ikea one.

Be careful with the depths if buying elsewhere.

Thanks for the tip, double checked what we had - the Ikea one was 620mm. The likely replacement (from Howdens) 616mm. Although slightly less depth that should still be fine, but i'll double check before ordering.

Because you get bigger cupboards and drawers.

If you have a 75mm space behind the cupboard then you are losing over 10% of your storage volume.

Indeed, but you have to then re-route all your existing services.
