repairing my credit file

I'm trying to sort out my credit score, so I've got a report from expirian and Equifax. Things aren't too bad, and I've seen a few things on there that I have expected. What I don't understand is:

On experian, it says I have an outstanding debt with v12 finance for a laptop. 107. Which is fine, I missed the last two payments for a laptop finance deal. Should I try and contact them and pay it? It says satisfied on the report.

On Equifax it says I have a hp agreement with 1st credit ltd , for 750 odd, which i have nothing to link it to, other than the laptop as the dates sort of tie up, but the amount is so far out, and have not received any letters about, so it's confused me.

What should I do?

Many thanks

V12 provided you with the finance. V12 appear to have sold the unsettled debt on to a collection agency 1st Credit Limited.

If you wish to obtain further credit in the near future, settling the debt would be advisable. As this transaction will be a blot on your record.
  • Pay both of them? V12 shows as a default on experian, while 1st show as a default on Equifax, and is for so much more money than the original 107 - and i'm not totally sure it's actually the v12 finance.

The satisfied default on your Experian report suggests you owe nothing to v12 now. Looks like any outstanding debt is with 1st Credit, so it's them you need to contact to discuss payment. The default entries stay on your report for six years from the default date. Defaults are bad news for credit scores but likely to be less harmful once marked as satisfied.

  • ok, to give an update, i contacted equifax. It turns out that 1st credit ltd have actually put a default notice on equifax about a hire purchase account from house of fraser, the original default was in 2006, so I beleive 1st credit ltd have been naughty?

Is there anyway to write to V12 and ask them to come to compromise and remove the default notice on experian?

    Many thanks for you help

You can try asking if they will remove it as a gesture of goodwill, but it is unlikely they will agree to as you say you did miss payments

What is the default date shown on the 1st credit account on your equifax file?

Is the 1st credit / house of fraser debt still outstanding?

You can write to complain to 1st credit stating that they have inaccurately and unfairly added a default date far later than the original default date from the original lender and that you require them to correct it and therefore remove the entry from your credit file (as it is more than 6years since the original default entry).

If there is an outstanding balance then before you write to complain you might want to confirm to yourself if this debt is statute barred or not, or if it could be about to go statute barred (in which case probably hold off on the complaint until it is).
