Thanks keystone - the paperwork definitely says it's a "quotation". The tilers said that the bathroom company owner told them we were having a pale floor when in fact we were having a dark floor - so there weren't enough tiles to do the whole bathroom anyway as he'd not ordered enough floor tiles in the dark colour.

I think this is where he's trying to get us to pay for the extra 2 boxes of tiles.

Tilers had to come back this morning anyway as the fitter had drilled a couple of holes in the wrong place for the wall hung toilet and the tiles were "short" so they had to dig the tile out and cut a new one in and then grout it again.

I think it's the bathroom companies fault - they've not really been up to the standard we expected and it's taking a rather long time although we're nearly there now - thank goodness!

    Thanks all

  • Well here we are a week after they've finally finished and he's found another £190 for extra work which he agreed to do as his guys were already there but didn't say he'd charge extra for along with £50 for these extra tiles.

The 3 week old toilet has stopped working - been in touch to tell them and they refuse to come out to fix it until we've paid them another £240 (on top of the £12K we've already paid for bathroom and downstairs cloakroom).

Showing their true colours now - very upset with them and sadly can never recommend them.

    Grrrr ;o(

If you ask someone to do something for you and they produce a quotation for you, then that is the price they have quoted and the price you pay. In other words, you can't be expected to pay for the extra tiles.

If you then ask someone to do something extra for you then the expectation is that you will pay for it. But, I will never get my head around contractors who present a surprise bill afterwards and expects a smile and a cheque. No one should expect a customer to know the value of an extra piece of work. A new price should be given and agreed beforehand; it is fair to both parties and prevents a situation like you have now.

So, what they end up with, is what they have. A stand off over £240 after £12k of work. You may as well review them somewhere on the internet. Someone will google them one day and they will bypass them because of it. Or maybe just because they charge £12k for two bathrooms.

  • Thanks Doozergirl,
That's pretty much where we're at, at the moment. It is only a £240 on top of a large amount but it's the principle of it.

Afraid we have expensive taste but this has been bought with some inheritance money so much as I'd rather my Grandad back, at least I have a really lovely bathroom to remember him by and that makes me smile.

The cloakroom downstairs didn't exist before so it's newly installed and converted from a cupboard so not just a toilet and sink.

We have a few neighbours who have already been in to have a look at what they've done with a view to getting theirs done too but won't be recommending them and also, we might well be reviewing them.

    Thanks for your advice.

FWIW I don't think its fair to be paying for two extra boxes of tiles when it ws them that got it wrong.

I do think its fair that you should pay for extras agreed on site. The problem here is that he didn't tell you what the costs would be and you didn't ask but rather assumed that because he didn't then it would be free. Elements of fault on both sides. Extras should always be agreed as to scope and cost before the work concerned is started.

As has been observed its developed into a standoff. My suggestion would be you pay the £ 190 and he funds the extra tiles and you both get on with life..

I don't think he has a contractual basis to lean on for refusing to address what should be a warranty item over disputed extra charges. He's on thin ice with that one.

    Cheers
