Help to settle an argument please

Hi Guys

My partner and I are arguing about the answer to this question so please help me to settle it :)

If you saw someone collecting donations to a charity shop in their car and then 5 mins later you saw them selling something out of their car would you think they were doing something wrong? They were selling something you had not just seen them collecting.

Do feel free to also comment on what you might do if you saw this happening.

All responses much appreciated :)

  • I'm not a copper or a judge. And I have no idea whether the charity donations were anything to do with the item they were selling. So there's no way I could be able to decide whether they were doing something morally unsound or not.

What I would do is nothing on that basis.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

They could have been selling the stuff for the charity in which case I don't think they're doing anything wrong. If they were selling items donated for charity and then pocketing the cash I would think it was dreadful and I would contact the charity in question to double check.

This is what I would do.

I think it would depend on where I saw them selling. If they were at a car boot sale, with other vendors, and a large charity banner (or something similar) I wouldn't think twice about it. If they were on their own selling things in a car park or street I'd think that was dodgy, regardless of whether they'd collection charity donations or not.

    I wouldn't simply assume anything.

It's possible something dodgy was going on , sure...but it's equally possible that the person was killing two birds with one stone and selling his own property whilst he was out anyway. Maybe he had pre-arranged to meet someone?

I don't see what good contacting the charity would do. How would they know what was going on if all you had to give them was 'he was selling something out his car but all I know about it was that it wasn't what he had just collected'?

Given the uncertain circumstance, I wouldn't be sticking my nose in tbh.

    Why worry?
  • I think it's always best not to get drawn into arguments about things which are none of my business

The charities lose a lot of contributions from thieves taking the charity bags left outside houses or claiming to be collecting for a charity when they are selling the stuff on themselves.

A charity should know if they have collectors in a certain area. I think it's very unusual for someone to be collecting and selling from his car.

Ah, you're working on the assumption the person in the OP was possibly bogus?

I was assuming he was a genuine collector.

    Understand your point more now.
