I always find the best thing is to run them over at junctions. Stops them complaining.

Let's boil this right the way down..........

Old man was being a fool, trying to prove he's still in control (old people do this quite a lot).

Driver on the other hand needs to realise that drivers are lower down the food chain than pedestrians (and cyclists), the only exception being on motorways.

He wasn't old. About 40ish I'd say and looked perfectly spritely as he strode across the road right in front of me.

Just to throw this round the other way.... nothing worse as a pedestrian than waiting to cross a road just for a car to block your path, only to have to wait there anyway trying to find a space on a busy highway. When they could have sacrificed a couple of seconds to allow you across.

Although this is less annoying then when there's a second car following you as the car in front to the junction then parking to close to your !!!! that you have to now walk around the back of two cars, just so you can get that 1ft closer to the junction (which incidentally saved you no time anyway).

He was crossing the road I was on, not the road I was turning in to.

As I've said, I was never going to run him over, just frustrated that he stepped out in front of me.

I can understand this. I have occasions where I've slowed to a crawl or stopped at junctions to wait for a gap in the flow on the main road, only to find that I can't use said gap because some numpty a pedestrian has decided to start crossing in front of me while I was waiting.

..You're waiting to join a main road a from a side street, bonnet already intruding in the main road then as you're about to set off some idiot puts their pushchair in front of your bonnet to walk across the front of you....
Perhaps you should correct your own road use before crititising others. ;)

A cyclist hugging the kerb might easily run into your protruding bonnet. So might a motorbike rider or car driver. You are blocking their right of way.

Afterwards you are the "some idiot" who caused or nearly caused an accident.

    Quite right.

The OP lost any sympathy I had for him when I came to the 'bonnet protruding' bit.

when I did my advanced driving observed drive a few years ago, the only criticism was an occasion when I was thought to be 'too timid' for waiting behind the Give Way lines at a T junction for ages until a gap appeared (it was v heavy traffic, but moving). It was suggested I should have edged out a bit, with the comment 'you have to ask by edging forwards and making eye contact'.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

He wasn't waiting for ages - there were no other cars in front of me. He was striding along and then strode into the road right in front of me. He could have easily waited or gone round the back. I can only speak for myself, but I was always taught to wait until the road was clear before crossing. The only place on a road I'd expect traffic to stop for me is a pedestrian crossing.

Yep, that's what happened, but I wasn't stopped very long. The road I was turning onto wasn't too busy, I just needed to look to check and I was good to go.

Erm, I'm the OP and my bonnet wasn't 'protruding'. Also, she's a she, not a he :D

    Oops :o

Sorry qwen. 'My bad' as they say these days.

Bad choice of word 'intruding' (or even protruding) into the road.

Anyhow a good thread to make us all think a bit.

    Time to move on though.

No worries. I'm still a bit confused about who had right of way though. I guess I just have to hope I don't run into him (figuratively!) again!
