Got a mail giving a lot of insight about lime scale and how offer to sort this by installing a filter. Benefit listed were multiple but didnt give much detail except a free offer to test etc..

Is it really what it claims? what the cost and maintenance involved?

It sounds like an attempt to sell you something that probably won't work or will be very expensive. Never buy on the basis of something coming through your letterbox. Do your own research.

If you have a limescale problem from hard water your best option is probably to install a water softener.

The only filter that works as far as I am aware is a very expensive Reverse Osmosis filter.

    Read up on water softeners.

There is a thread in this forum about them.

The letter/leaflet you had is probably about an electronic water descaler.

You wrap a coil around your main incoming water pipe which is attached to a box containing some electronics. An electromagnetic field is generated which alters the property of the limescale preventing it from adhering to taps, kettle element, in shower heads etc.

Inline magnet types are also available.

These should not be confused with a water softener which requires salt for ion exchange.

They should also not be confused with things that actually work. :D
