Cannot open the external harddrive. Everytime we try to open it the computer crashes. We need to take it back as it is still under warranty but need to retrieve the information beforehand. Have tried everything we could think of. Please help.

is the drive detected when you connect it? the add new hardware bubble's poping up in the bottom right corner?
also check computer management, disk management to see if the drive is listed
start, control panel, administrative tools and computer management.
then click disk management if the drive is there check what info it gives you is there a partition? or has that been lost? it will display unallocated if there is nothing there.
if it is displayed then it may be possible to use some data recovery software to scan the drive. and see if it can get anything back.
I use easy recovery pro with a lot of success.0
