Hi, I recently bought a Dell with a CD burner, but no DVD burner and need to buy a DVD burner...is there anything I should know and is there anywhere that is worth looking at for competitive deals, etc?

Just check it's compatible with both DVD+ and DVD-, DVD RAM isn't as common but may be useful compatibility to have "just in case". I've got an Asus DRW 1608p3s and been very happy with it.

Just to reiterate Asus Mobo's point (;)) my parents have a sony burner and it's awful, can hardly find any make of discs that it works with and even then there's no guarantee they can be read by other pcs. I personally have stuck with Asus hardware most of the time (I have an Asus cd burner as well). Neither Asus burner has ever caused me problems, has been compatible with every disc I've shoved in there and are quite fast. Probably a lot cheaper than when I bought them as well.

Oh and Sony drives fail a lot of the RAM tests, so a Sony DVD-RAM drive is pretty pointless and their also have a big problem finding firmware updates for OEM.

That was exactly the problem I had trying to sort out my parents drive. OEM, lots of people with the same problem of it not burning to many dvd discs (bit pointless with a dvd burner) and since it was an earlier model drive Sony had no interest in producing upgraded firmware. Only workaround was to risk permanently damaging the drive by flashing it's rom to change it's identity and use the firmware for a similar model LG. I didn't bother, better to have a partially working drive than none at all.
