Hi guys,

I've got a Clio 1.2 16v which I bought 3 weeks ago and it has developed a fault. When the clutch is not pressed and just idling there is a loud tapping/rattling noise coming from the gearbox area. The noise goes away when you press the clutch down

I've uploaded a video onto youtube so you can see what I mean. The garage I bought it from said they had a new cluch fitted to the car the day before I picked it up..

I have done a lot of research but so many different things come up and garages are only interested in taking my money just to have a 'look' at it!! smiley7.gif

Any ideas? Should it make that noise after a clutch change?

Sharon

Either the clutch is falling to bits or the gearbox is.

Ever had the oil changed in the gearbox?

take back to garage as you had it less then 6 months you should read the soga sales act
  • sounds like something is FUBAR in that box.

back to the garage you bought get to rectify or get them to give you your cash back, replacement recon box on those about £800 plus vat plus surcharge for you old one until they get it back, second hand box £150 plus but what condition its in is anyone guess.
  • take it back & get the problem fixed.

its sounds like the bearing is failing, i have heard this similar noise on a Peugeot, don't drive it or you risk doing damage inside the gearbox.

Hi guys, thank you for the replies. I'm stuck now as what to do.

I spoke to the trader that I bought the car from and he advised me to take it to the garage where he had the clutch fitted to my car so they could find the fault. I took it up the Saturday after I posted this thread (200 mile round trip) and when I got there the noise wasn't there. I drove it around for 45 mins and eventually got it to do it, the garage said there was definitely a fault and that the gearbox/clutch needed to be stripped so they could see what the problem is.

I booked it in for last Monday and left it with them for a week while I was on holiday. Picked it up on Friday was simply told that all they had done was 'topped the gearbox oil up' as it was 'low'. I had no choice but to drive it home and the noise is still there.

I've phoned them and they aren't interested now, they told me to take it back up again so they can hear it however I simply cannot afford to keep doing that sort of mileage and I work 6 days a week so don't have much time off.

Not sure what to do now. Only thing I can think of is to get it diagnosed here and ask the garage to come and fetch it and bring it back repaired?

Go back to the Trader. Regardless of what garage fitted the clutch for the Trader, it's the Trader's responsibility to resolve the problem.

From that noise I would have confidently told you that the input shaft had been damaged when they were changing the clutch. However, that fault wouldn't have gone away with any amount of driving! It probably is a cheapo job and they've fitted just a friction plate and the old bearing is bouncing off the old fingers of the cover plate, but you really have to give responsibility back to the trader and let him resolve.

    Thanks for the replies.

I spoke to the trader last night and told him I need it sorting and he said there wasn't much he could do. He said if it got worse to take it to him and he'll try and sort it.

The trader seems reluctant to want to have to pay for the gearbox to be stripped down.
