As an alternative to GnuCash you might want to checkout AceMoney

AceMoney Lite is free for 2 accounts0 -
Thanks broadwood, but i've moved on from paper.
For any given task there is an appropriate (time/energy) solution.
I'm all for trying new technology but you don't need a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Likewise you don't need special software to run domestic accounts efficiently and accurately.
Simplest solution usually ends up being the best. Less to go wrong.Never trust a financial institution.

I'm just watching this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqAaScYVeRQ
Its making things a lot clearer for me, i didn't realise it was using double entry bookkeeping.0 -
The spreadsheet version i currently use is reliable, simple and without risk of confusion too
. Like i said i'm beyond paper now.
My house could burn down with all the paper in it, and i'd still have a backup
.
I prefer a combination of online banking and paper backup. All on or via PC with no paper backup is akin to all eggs in one basket, but both depend on us surviving any fire in the first place.
Each to his/her own.... either way it's only money....and money isn't real anyway. They just print more or press a few buttons.
Never trust a financial institution.

I'm well into gnucash if any one is looking for a solution i can thoroughly recommend it. That youtube video has really helped understand the fundamentals.0

I used Quicken from the early 1990's until the UK version stopped in the mid-2000's, since when I've used MS Money. While I still think Quicken was a better product Money works just fine. I did look at GnuCash as an alternative but at the time I thought it was poorly designed, but it may be better now.0

Paper is reliable and simple and without risk of confusion.

It's also losable and flammable.
All my accounts are stored on my PC. They are backed up to my PC at work whenever I close my finance application, which backs up to the cloud. All encrypted by my PC at home first. So thats 3 separate buildings that need to burn down at roughly the same time before I lose any data.
I don't trust online banking for any kind of archived data, only for checking my recent transactions match with what I think they should be.0
