Fit new bathroom suite cost

Hey there. The wife and I have decided to gut our bathroom and completely refit it. It's quite a small bathroom; about 2.2m x 1.9m. Can anyone give me an idea of the labour costs for this work; I'm waiting for a quote to arrive but as this is the first time we've embarked on a bathroom project we don't wanna get ripped off-

- Fit new toilet, basin, heated towel rail & bath in same places apart from installing new taps in opposite end of the bath from where they currently are (my dad previously owned the house and told me the taps were once at the opposite end, so there could be existing pipe work in place).
- Fit a thermostatic valve shower with a ceiling mounted head. This also involves putting up a stud wall that will be 1.9m long, as the wall the valve needs concealing in is not very thick.
- Replace all the floorboards as a lot of them are rotten from a previous leak.
- Fit a (very) small new window.
- Fit 4 spotlights and a new extractor fan (there is already a space for the fan; our current one is rubbish).
- Skim the artex ceiling
- Tile the floor and walls with medium sized tiles (also supplied), it's about 11 sqm of tiling as one wall we are painting and not tiling.

I'm in the process of buying everything to be fitted; my quote will be labour only. I'm thinking my budget will be £1600-£1700, should that be sufficient? I live just outside Newcastle by the way as I know area effects labour costs. Thanks in advance!

Where I live, which is southern England, the labour would be anything from £5,000 upwards. My neighbour recently paid a bit more than that, but without the new floorboards and window. The usual approach is to get three quotes, so you know the going rate.

I suspect not but as said, more quotes (and from recommendations if possible) needed.

  • Thanks for the input, 5k seems excessive for where I live. I was thinking fitting the suite and tiling is 5 days work, electrics a day, plastering a day, joinery 2 days (window, floorboards, stud wall). Is that unrealistic to expect it to be done in about 9 days?

£5k seems high for where I am too. Average job is £ 2k - £ 2½k excl suite, tiles etc. Average elapsed timescale is two weeks.

I wish people would just stop saying its only a small bathroom. Whatever the size it still has to have a bath, shower, loo, WHB etc fitted and the fitting cost / time for these is the same. From a tiling perspective a small room still has 4 corners, a window and a door to negotiate. In fact a small room can be more challenging than a big one. If theres no room to swing a cat theres only room in there for one body at a time.

Otherwise, as DYN says, the answer is twice the length from the middle to one end.

    Cheers

  • Ok, cheers. I can probably stretch to 2k, failing that I might have to buy a slightly cheaper suite I suppose. The guy I'm thinking of using to manage the project did my dads brand new bathroom when he added an extension, supply and fit it was 4k for the suite with stand alone shower and all the tiling, plastering and electrics. Was probably double the amount of tiling I need so I'll just wait for his quote I suppose...

Find a bathroom fitter not a builder too. Logical to use a builder when the job is part of an extension. Its not in your case.,

  • My dads builder used a plumber/bathroom fitter to manage the bathroom whilst he got on with the rest. The reason I went to him first is because having seen my dads bathroom he did an amazing job. Thanks for all the input.
