Can anyone please advise me about dual fuel please?

Hi

After years of living abroad we have returned to the UK, bought a house and I am now trying to circumnavigate the utility 'maze'.

The house we bought had oil heating but we have had it changed to mains gas. I chose to go with e.on as they were the only utility company who could fit a meter in time for us to move in. The house had a pre-payment meter for its electricity so I asked e.on to change us to a regular (paid by dd) meter which, after a few months of paying the gas bill, they have done.

My original intention was to set up a duel fuel account through e.on but their customer service had been very poor, they have missed appointments to change meters and been an all round nightmare to get hold of on the phone. My dh has suggested we change suppliers.

All of our paperwork is in a box under a load of others in the spare room, waiting to be sorted. Do I need to dig it out to see if we are tied in for a particular length of time or will we definitely be? I don't remember receiving anything tying us in but can't believe we won't be. (I can't face sitting on hold for 30 mins to them unnecessarily!)

Thanks in advance for any advice.

If you paid for the meter to be exchanged then I'd say it's unlikely that you are in a contract. If you are that unhappy then change anyway the penalty for leaving won't be too much.

Did you claim compensation for the missed appointments? If you haven't done so then do it now.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. No, the meter was free I think which makes me think we are probably tied in.

I got £22 for the missed appointment but it's the inconvenience (and their unwillingness to call the fitter to see if he would make it that night that was more annoying!).

It's the tariff that ties you in (or not), not the meter. Armed with the tariff name (it's on every bill) just look up the T&C's online.
If it's Standard tariff, there is no ETC.

It's E.ON EnergyPlan. No idea what that is. Think it's the standard tariff.

So, do I just pay the bill that has just been sent to me (which covers 14 May to 17 Aug), then apply to whoever I choose to go with and then e.on will just send a bill for the balance until the changeover occurs? Do I need to contact e.on at all?

    Sorry to be so clueless!

It's not Standard tariff, and there is a small ETC of £10 for dual fuel.

You pay your current bill, and when you have switched you submit a closing reading. You then receive a closing Eon bill. The incoming supplier contacts Eon.
