Replacing HDD with SSD
Comments
-
I do a regular full backup every few weeks and have everything stored on an external HDD so I'm not too worried out losing any info.
I'm 100% certain that it is the HDD making the noise as I've confirmed this by using a stethoscope on it, (I have one in my toolkit that I use at work, not one that I use for playing doctors and nurses) and listening to it this way it does sound like it's either a bearing or something rubbing slightly.
I've check tightened all of the mounting screws and they were all fine & I disabled just about every unneeded process on startup and it made very little difference.
Here'e the HJT log

Many thanks for all of the advice and tips so far.0 -
You sound confident it's the harddrive that is making the noise. But that humming noise doesn't always mean it's dying. Old harddrives (5+ years) can make the same noise but carry on working for many more years. But I find that once a harddrive is over 5 years old, it's best to start looking for another one.
I think you're doing the right thing by looking at SSD drives. If it were me, I'd be considering the Samsung 840 EVO. Very good performance and a reasonable price to match.0 -
plenty of bloat evident
avg, skype, ctfmon, webshots, logmein, aol, googleupdate, skypeupdater, (acs possibly) + possibly more depedending on browser used + various services!!

I disabled Skype, webshots, AOL and & logmein from the startup list and it didn't make very much difference.
They are only showing in the HJT log because I started them after the computer was up and running.
Ctfmon is also only showing due to having been using MS office earlier today. This program is also disabled in the startup config.0 -
While I'd agree that just by reinstalling XP from scratch will make a big difference, an SSD also can make a huge improvement in overall performance boost and not just the boot times that most people bleat on about.
Since going over to SSD's on my 2 desktops any new PC I get in the future will now have an SSD drive as far as I'm concerned. It's the most cost effective upgrade you can do.
I still use old spinny drives for storage but for the main operating system SSD is the way to go as far as I'm concerned.... I mean really, rotational disk platters in this day and age

if it's taking 2 minutes extra to get on the web on a 5 year old machine, with 4GB, something is causing that, either the things mentioned or windows update, or something not visible in the log - a reinstall or trimming all the things mentioned should cure it - they appear in the second half of the log, meaning elements are running behind the scenes whatever applications you start!!

Download Ubuntu from the Internet, it's free, fast, and almost the same as windows I use it for web surfing, you also get less viruses ect.

I've said it before as general advice, but if I was moving to SSD, I'd want to:
Get the BIOS settings right (AHCI?)
Install at least Windows 7 FRESH (don't clone)
I really don't know why people cling so tightly to WinXP whilst using the latest hardware.0 -
Have you taken a look at the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive?
it might tell you if it IS on the way out or just normal operation.
Give this a go:
http://sourceforge.jp/projects/crystaldiskinfo/downloads/58588/CrystalDiskInfo5_6_2.zip/
extract and run to check the S.M.A.R.T. status of your drives.Laters
