More and more utility firms are sharing customer payment information through the credit reference agencies, just like more traditional lenders. So like other lenders they can register and update information about your account with them each month, typically showing your payment, balance and a status code to indicate whether your account is up to date.

    Thank you for your reply.

So if someone uses my personal information and open an account with a energy supplier and do not pay for the bill. Can the energy supplier changes my credit file?

It sounds unfair.....Because it's very easy to get other person's name and date of birth. And it's very easy to open an account with an energy supplier using other person's information, as the supplier does not require signature or ID copy of the person.

If you are John Smith dob 01/01/1970, and somebody else opens an account with an energy supplier using those exact same details, but does not pay the bill, then that will effect the credit file of a John Smith dob 01/01/1970 who lives at the address where the energy was supplied. That's not you is it? You live somewhere else.

I am continually in credit (positive balance) with my energy suppliers. IE: they are not providing 'goods' (fuel) in a credit situation - they always owe ME money. Do they have the right to submit monthly updates on my credit file in this situation? Am I entitled to revoke any part of my agreement allowing them to do this?

Not if its in the terms. You could owe them.

My bank account has no overdraft, but its reported as I could go overdrawn or have a DD bounced which they can report.
