Portable 3G Routers (wifi via a usb dongle)... ABROAD (i.e. Colombia)

Anybody have experience with a Portable 3G Wifi Router such as:

Or

I'm thinking of getting something like this so I can have wifi on the road, ideally abroad.

So I'd buy an unlocked 3g dongle which is compatible via the reviews of whatever device I went with)

Then abroad I'd pick up a data sim et voilà ... wifi wherever i am.

Does anybody have any experience with this kind of set up?

Possibly will do with decent unlocked usb dongle

Unlocking Huawei dongles legally seems easy http://www.sheeptech.com/how-to-unlock-huawei-usb-modem-for-free

Why not just purchase a normal MiFi in the first place? No need to obtain an extra USB modem. £30 and you are all set.

They work well abroad? Sounds ideal if that's all I'll need plus the local data sim.

It's unlocked, so you can use most any Data SIM. In addition, you can connect them via USB to a laptop to keep it powered up or plug them in to the mains power otherwise. On the other hand you can position it for the best signal whilst you can position yourself for comfort.
So, yes, it is likely all you will need.

You can actually get them even cheaper, but why bother with the hassle involved if you were happy to spend more than £30 in the first place.

Totally, thanks a lot for pointing me in that direction! I'm on the case
