Creditor has changed default date to keep it on my credit file!

  • You need to get this sorted for a mortgage and if you refer to FOS it could take months, and before that you have to give Welcome 8 weeks to sort it.

You have to either wait til you are sure its SB then complain to Welcome, or complain now, risk it not SB and then look at maybe paying it.

I read on here that mortgage applications ask if you have unsettled accounts, even if not on your credit reports.

Thanks all, the debt is now SB. However I think they may have issued a CCJ against me back in December 2008. I have only just found out about this by signing up to Equifax, it's not on my Experian report.

    How does this affect things?

By definition if there is a CCJ it can't be statute barred.

If there is a CCJ then that will start the clock again and your CCJ will stay for six years from the date it was obtained. I do not think the default should be changed though.

Why on earth do credit card companies do this. I had a credit card with Sainsbury's for years and paid up front every month by direct debit. Possibly on 3 occasions I contacted them and asked to pay half one month and the rest the following month.
Then out of the blue I received a letter saying they were withdrawing my card as my credit rating was bad. I didn't pursue it as I thought possibly as they weren't making money from me they didn't want my business any more?

They are not allowed to do this. But they do.

You are correct with your reasoning. They want you to contact them.

Experian will ask the creditor, who will say its correct and that will be that.....

What valid reasons are there then for changing a default date?...I thought you could only default once and that date should be fixed?....

Surely there should be no reason why a CRA should change a default date?

Default dates can be changed by the creditor legitimately if it turns out there was a mistake or the original date was not accurate. They would have to be able to justify it though, and they shouldn't just make arbitrary or malicious changes.
