Sky vs Internet catch up

I am quickly realising that alot of the USA TV I watch is available free from the USA braodcasters catchup sites

Are there any channels/shows that I wouldn't be able to get doing this?

Are there any good legal free websites for finding these shows?

I connect my laptop up via VGA cable and have a lead for the audio. Are there better ways of veiwing internet TV on a flat screen?

Could anyone see any problems with effectively ditching my costly Sky?

Thanks

No problems at all. If you have the technical knowledge to set it up then go for it.

There are programs that you can only watch if you appear to be in the USA but you can change your IP address by using an american proxy site and you can then view them. It is not illegal to do that.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Indeed, I use the Modify Headers extension on Firefox to get my fix of the Daily Show and The Colbert Report.

If you stop subscribing to Sky you'll still get a decent selection of channels (i.e. Freesat from Sky), but no recording.

If your PC/ TV has DVI or HDMI you would get better results.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Considering that they're probably being broadcast in HD by Sky, you can expect a massive drop in quality, and also that anything you're using now could stop working at any point.
Also of course, consider where the money comes from to make these programmes - for UK viewers of an American programme on Sky, that means you're paying Sky to buy the rights to that programme.
No money - no programmes get made...

It could breach the terms and conditions on that site though, which may lead to that site taking action against you. Why do you think they geoblock in the first place.

I personally use unblock-us.com for my Netflix as it allows access to all regions, but it works with quite a few of the US channels as well. I just change to their DNS server in my router and everything on the network is covered. You can try them free for a week after that it's $4.99 a month.
