    Hi,

Dont forget the Party Wall Act which is now in force which requires you to inform the neighbours of any works that you wish to do on the Party Wall giving then 14 days in which to make their views known !

A one brick wall is 9" thick ( ie, a brick laid length wise), confuses calling a half brick wall (width of a brick, 4.5 ") a single brick wall .

Well best not get into an argument about that, we talk single brick for 4" walls and double for 9".

My point was simply that dividing walls are often only 4" + plaster thick, and transmit noise very directly, more so than a well insulated partition wall as mentioned above.

I guess it also depends on the noise differential between the 2 homes, ie, some folks you can hear down the street;);)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

Acoustic insulation is a notoriously difficult field.

Fortunately I do not hear much from the neighbours at all due to the party wall being a double layer of concrete blocks (and seemingly much denser than modern breeze blocks) which is dry lined on each side.

However, when renovating I replaced the original dry lining of hardboard(!) with special sound-insulating plasterboard. It is like ordinary plasterboard but with a much denser filling so the whole thing is much heavier.

What I've noticed with very old walls is that there are often small gaps in the mortar and I think this plays a part in sound transmission.
