Virus/firewall

I have the security suite for Norton 2007 but am aware of people having problems. I did install it yesterday but noticed my PC being a little slower. I have taken it off and all is well.

Should I try installing it again or go for AVG and Zone alarm?

You will notice a difference when you install virus protection, especially on lower end machines, as there is a new process being run continiously.

Have you tried AVG before, and if so, did you notice a dramatic decrease in speed/performance?

If you haven't tried it, then by all means do so, and then compare the difference. Both software suits are updated regularly anyway, so there's nothing to fear concerning new virus threats etc...

So, try AVG - if it doesn't slow you down as much as Norton, great, stick with it. If the difference is very similiar, then it might be worth taking the time to get used to each programme and seeing which one meets your needs best.

I'd suggest something like comodo instead of zonealarm for your firewall. After using ZA for years I've found the most recent versions too bloated and as I think I alluded to in your other thread it now (or it did about a month ago) installs a spam filtering app into Outlook without me asking or having any choice, this caused Outlook to become unusable on my machine until I uninstalled zonealarm.

    Thanks for your reply.

I have used AVG before but I now have a new machine (got it on Saturday) its 160g so its far from slow.

Shall I just go by whichever files are the smallest or just reinstall Norton?

What is the spec of your machine? 160g is referring to your hardrive storage, which doesn't really indicate the speed your machine is capapble of (although if you bought it on saturday, chances are it's pretty up-to-date!)

I wouldn't trust which files are the smallest in size, as each application will be coded differently and therefor will have different efficiencies when it comes to utilising your system resources.

If you've used AVG and it worked well, stick with it. If it aint broke... :D

Take into account superscaper's suggestions for alternate FW's, seems like a very sensible suggestion.

SScraper I did notice your comment about Zone Alarm and it has put a doubt in my mind now. I think I might just stick with Norton. Unless you know that It will cause major problems. It was just a pig to uninstall earlier as it messed up my system32 files and I had to restore it back.

  • I ditched Norton and AVG for slowing my system down. I now use NOD32 and its the best antivirus i've ever used and it won't slow your system even when doing a full system scan you can still use your PC .
Don't listen to the bad things about Vista its the best

Just because it's free don't mean it's good

    Ditch Norton Now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :wall:

Just Because you read it some where don't mean it's right ;)
