So, the latest in a long, long line of administration problems and let-downs with regards to our charity account is that HSBC have now tried to sneak through a direct debit, made payable to NPower. A few months ago, we had to query a miscellaneous charge which was subsequently taken off. Never dealt with NPower, ever, either as an individual or a charity. Incredible that a bank can get so much wrong in such a short space of time. Sigh.

Wondering if anyone else holding a charity account with HSBC has had a strange NPower debit on their statement lately. Getting really frustrated and tired with all the problems now. Always, always check your statements, folks. You never know what you might find there!

  • I have been trying to sort out a charity account for six months now. so many hoops to jump through, then they timed me out. Now having problems with new FATCA forms which nobody seems to understand. I'll lose my grant soon (and my temper!)

our charity account with Barclays had four fraudulent DD's set up
two with RAC, one with a pet insurers and another with an energy company

this was with Barclays bank - what i found most frustrating was the total could care less attitude of bank staff - they seemed to think that as we could claim the money back under the DD guarantee that it was Ok
I tried until I was blue in the face to find out the origin of the DD's but it seems that you can now set them up electronically and very few (if ANY) checks are carried out as to the legitimacy of the dd

eventually we had a note placed on our account that NO dd's were to be set up unless a proper paper mandate had been signed by both signatories of the charity - this eventually stopped the fraud.

It might be worth asking HSBC for a similar arrangement for your account if you haven't already - good luck
